Immerse yourself in the rich culture of Latin America and the Caribbean.

In the College of Charleston's Latin American and Caribbean Studies program, you won't just learn about the language, culture, history, politics and sociology of this rich, colorful and diverse region.

You'll live it.

As part of your program, you'll spend a semester abroad embedded in the culture, speaking the language and deepening your understanding and appreciation of the region's people and issues.

About the Program


Consider Latin American and Caribbean Studies program as either a major or a minor.
  • Major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies

    As a Latin American and Caribbean Studies major, you'll immerse yourself in global culture in a study abroad or internship abroad program while learning the history, languages, anthropology, sociology, politics, art history and literature of this region. 

    In addition, you'll gain unique skills and experiences to help you prepare for a successful career:

    • Develop language proficiency (we specialize in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese)
    • Enhance your cross-cultural competence to stand out to potential employers in today's globalized world
    • Expand your global network
    • Gain multidisciplinary skills including research and anlaysis, problem solving and intercultural communication.

     

    LACS Major in the Academic Catalog
  • Minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies

    A minor in Latin American and Caribbean Area Studies consists of the following:

    • 18 hours in Latin American and Caribbean Area Studies courses with not more than 9 hours in any one discipline (excluding LACS).
    • Students are encouraged to fulfill their language requirement in Spanish or Portuguese.
    • Students are encouraged to spend one semester in a study abroad program in Latin America or the Caribbean.
